Introduction
Aliste Technologies is a Consumer IOT brand that develops smart home solutions & makes them accessible for masses via a subscription model at merely INR 1 per day per appliance.
Smart homes for long have been an aspirational dream of many. With booming smartphone adoption, control of one’s home's appliances via one’s phone seems like an obvious extension. Yet, as per a recent study by Google, adoption of Smart Home Devices in urban Indian homes is sub-1%. The reasons for such negligible adoption can be attributed to a few things :

  • A lack of a reliable solution at an accessible price point
  • Wrong targeting : The entire industry works in a margin intensive model wherein the target demographic consists of new homeowners & people who are carrying out renovation. This typically involves people who are in their late-forties or early-fifties.
These typically aren't the early adopters of tech.

In order to truly drive user adoption, the younger tech-savvy users have to be targeted. This is an extremely price sensitive demographic that can not afford exorbitant entry points. An affordable D2C subscription model with stable & reliable solutions would facilitate adoption & drive home automation among the masses.
The subscription is enabled by a reliable product that has been developed in-house and has been validated wherein, the solutions were installed in over 1600 homes & 5000 active users. One of the inferences drawn from the sales pilot was that user data suggests habit formation over time with a steep Week on week increase in appliance operation via app & voice control which is highly encouraging for a rental / subscription model.

Aliste was featured on the first season of Shark Tank India, which was a roaring success and led to tremendous exposure & recall value for the brand.
The solution works on an extremely lean model wherein they provide basic switch & remote based automation solutions which cover all existing appliances at an extremely accessible price point of ₹1 per day per appliance, providing a standard 2 BHK automation solution for as low as ₹300/ month while in contrast a similar automation solution would cost upwards of ₹75K to ₹1 Lakh.

A large user base of automation users can be leveraged to push smart home extensions like Smart Locks & Smart lights that would be fulfilled by brand partners like Yale locks & Philipps hue that provide upto 25% affiliate commissions and alleviate warranty & servicing requirements, Thereby there is tremendous scope in upsells wherein the brand’s own offerings act as a facilitator to enter a home & lead to development of a complete smart home ecosystem.

Aliste is co-founded by VIT college mates Anant Ohri, Aakarsh Nayyar, Bhavya Kansal, Konark Gautam, Shreyansh Jain & Udit Pandoh. The founders would often face problems with an automation solution installed in their college dorm themselves, which led them to start working on Aliste. The team has a capable mix of technical and operational expertise which leads them to believe they are on track to revolutionize this relatively unorganized space.

Market Opportunity

The Indian smart home space currently lacks a go-to player with a significant market share, the Indian smart home market is estimated to reach $13.5 Billion by 2026 with a CAGR of 29.8% during the forecast period. The exponentially-increasing adoption of Voice assistants like Alexa & Google Home, especially in Tier-2 & Tier-3 cities also signals a major opportunity for a price-effective smart home solution.

The Aliste suite of automation products are retrofittable - which allow them to be installed across old and new homes. Not only that, they have an innovative financing model which ensures buyers don’t have to pay upfront. With these two innovations, Aliste has increased their Serviceable market significantly as compared to other competitors. The team has the right mix of techies and business heads, and are filled with go-getters. 100X believes Aliste will be the inflection point at which the Indian home automation market will explode.

Conclusion

At their core, Aliste is a mission driven brand with a strong drive to facilitate conscious energy usage in Indian homes. The solutions curb wastage & lead to power savings in your home via full-end analytics & green mode functionalities. Indian homes have an ever increasing power consumption rate and the company’s aim is to put a dent on that number and lead to a smarter, greener way of life.
